Past Concerts 2000 - 2001

1 April 2000 - Bach: Mass in B minor
Nancy Argenta - soprano, Robin Blaze - countertenor
William Kendall - tenor, Michael George - bass
Florilegium David Hill - conductor

To mark the 250th anniversary of Bach's death, a performance of his B minor Mass, described by one early critic as "the greatest work of all ages and of all peoples". Certainly, it is one of the highest pinnacles of the choral repertoire. Played on period instruments, this final summation of all Bach's choral writing was a fitting celebration for the Waynflete's 30th anniversary - and for the first concert of the new century.

9 June 2000 - Mendelssohn: Elijah
Janice Watson, soprano; Sally Bruce-Payne, mezzo soprano
William Kendall, tenor; Matthew Best, bass
Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra
- conductor David Hill

In the year 2000, we celebrated the 250th anniversary of Bach's death. Felix Mendelssohn was a great champion of Bach's music, and in 1829 directed the first performance of the St Matthew Passion since Bach's lifetime.

10 July 2000 - Music by the River

The show must go on! Concert by the river at St Cross

A concert of unaccompanied music, including English madrigals, romantic partsongs, and songs by Elgar, Mendelssohn, Stanford, Grainger, Gibbons and Sullivan, conducted by David Hill and Philip Scriven. Now firmly established as a Winchester Festival favourite this concert, with the backdrop of the marvellous Chapel of St Cross by the River Itchen, on a summer evening offers an unforgettable setting, even if it does rain!

Our brave audience enjoyed the concert, despite the weather!

Arias sung by Emma Kirkby Florilegium David Hill "A near-capacity audience enjoyed the chance to appreciate the tone, clarity and discipline of this well-established choir in an acoustically more sympathetic venue than their customary home, Winchester Cathedral.
It particularly favoured the centre-piece of their programme, Bach's joyful but taxing double-choir motet, Singet dem Herrn. Director David Hill's carefully-chosen tempi generated a compelling rhythmic impetus to ornamental lines such as 'the children of Zion', dignity to the central chorale and transparency to the final fugue. This culminated in a ringing top Baroque B flat for the sopranos, though all sections - including over 40 male voices - were creditable throughout." Derek Beck, Hampshire Chronicle
