Patrick Gowers Cantata was first performed in Salisbury Cathedral in 1991.
You might not recognise the composer's name - but you'll almost certainly have heard his music. The Waynflete Singers brought this jazz-inspired composition by Patrick Gowers to Winchester Cathedral in a concert of 'audience friendly' 20th century music.

Patrick Gowers is best known for his original film and television scores which include Smiley's People, The Woman in White and Sherlock Holmes. In recent years he has turned his talents to concert and religious compositions, including the charismatic Cantata written for the 1991 Southern Cathedrals Festival and first performed in Salisbury Cathedral under the direction of Richard Seal, to whom the five movement work is dedicated. Written for triple choir and organ or small orchestra, the Cantata is an intensely moving, spiritual work which takes the form of a meditation on Psalm 139. Patrick Gowers arranged the orchestration specially for this concert in Winchester Cathedral, which featured leading exponents of twentieth century repertoire, Sinfonia 21 making their first appearance in the city.
