"It was apparent that the exceptionally high standards achieved by the Waynflete Singers under their previous conductors were being maintained by Andrew LumsdenA partnership with the renowned period ensemble Florilegium ensured that this was to be a memorable occasion. Adding still further pleasures were the contributions of the soloists - Carolyn Sampson, Matthew Beale and Christopher Purves, with Sarah Baldock sensitively presiding at the chamber organ.
Mr Lumsden's handling of the introduction gripped the attention at the outset. Later the choir's firm attack did much to convey the joyous excitement of choruses such as "Awake the Harp" and "The Heavens are Telling", but even in softer sections the sound had an intensity that ensured utmost clarity, so that words carried well in the lofty auditorium. The brilliance of the tone quality and control of nuance was excellent. While there were many finely balanced duos and trios early on, the partnership of baritone and soprano as Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden supplied a delectable conclusion.
The conductor's tempi, which had resulted in much buoyancy earlier, were eminently suitable for this mutually adjusted and artistically refined liaison. The final "Sing the Lord" chorus then made a mighty close to an outstanding performance."
